Biostatisticians play key roles in designing studies – from helping to formulate the questions that can be answered by data collection to the decisions on how best to collect the data – and in analyzing the resulting data. They also develop new statistical methods for such data. To start with, the role that statistical methodology has within scientific methodology will be described and discussed. In the course, it is discussed different structures of data, among them quantitative and qualitative data. Descriptive statistics is introduced in the course through use of tables, figures and statistical measurements. Research in biostatistics involves the development of new statistical methods and the innovative application of existing methods in areas including study design, causal inference, assay validation, machine learning, software development, and reproducible research monitoring.
